Community Involvement

Having engaged as a community volunteer for a good part of my life, I’ve come to realize that  inclusion, literacy and housing are fundamental to establishing meaningful career paths.

For most not for profit organizations, decreased government funding and increased competition for fund development dollars are constant challenges.  As Brett Wilson says in his book “Redefining Success:  still making mistakes” , the three classes all of us should take are:  marketing, entrepreneurship and philanthropy.  Whether we invest time or money in our favourite causes, it’s win-win.  The agency is able to provide more meaningful services and we’re able to find more purpose in our lives.

The community causes I’m currently committed to include:

  • The Aeolian Hall  which is one of Canada’s top 10 music venues, a provider of a wide range of musical experiences and a leader in El Sistema programs for children and adults.  www.aeolianhall.ca
  •  London Middlesex Master Gardeners which provides unbiased horticultural advice and expertise to encourage better gardening.   ww.londonmiddlesexmastergardeners.com.
  • Old East Village which is re-branding as an arts and culture destination and an agri-food hub.  We’re using gardening as one technique to aid that transformation.  http://oevhub.wordpress.com/2014/01/14/what-is-the-purpose-of-the-oev-hub/
